Getting Things Done
AmeriCorps*State works with Governor-appointed State Service Commissions to provide grants to public and nonprofit organizations that sponsor service programs around the country. Grants assist these groups in recruiting, training and placing AmeriCorps members to meet critical community needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.

Purpose
The Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation (PTCF) AmeriCorps Program is AmeriCorps*State. Its purpose is to engage AmeriCorps members in direct service and capacity-building to address unmet community needs. The PTCF AmeriCorps Program has 15 full-time positions performing service activities for one year.

Unique Experience
The Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation AmeriCorps Program is a unique experience because members are exposed to the complexity of community needs through their role in the Parasol Community Collaboration. Specifically, members work at a primary host site which is an agency a part of the Parasol Community Collaboration. The Collaboration is a group of over 55 non-profit agencies whose mission falls into one of four categories: education & youth development, social services, environment and arts, culture & heritage. There are multiple opportunities for members to learn and collaborate with different agencies addressing the range of unmet needs in the community. This may come in the form of an AmeriCorps Team initiative, or it might come individually. The end result is a more thorough understanding of public service, non-profit structure, and the idea of collaboration.

Celebrating the rich and diverse world in which we live

The Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation AmeriCorps Program hosted its first "Celebrate Diversity Around the World" on January 25 at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center. More than 30 Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts joined AmeriCorp members, playing games, learning languages, dancing and celebrating traditions of many world cultures. The children went to different stations, manned by AmeriCorps members, to do the various activities as a way of earning their "World Neighbor" badges and "Language and Culture" belt loops.
