Girls on the Run-Sierras moves into DWR Center

We are pleased to welcome Girls on the Run – Sierras (GOTR-S) to the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center.  Danielle Rees, Executive Director of GOTR-S along with Jessica Nelson, Program Coordinator will be staffing the new office.

“Our new office in the DWR Center provides an ideal location for our programs around Lake Tahoe and in Reno, “Rees said.  “We are excited for the opportunity for increased collaboration with other nonprofits under the same roof.”

GOTR-S is an exciting program gaining in popularity around the Tahoe Basin. GOTRS-inside Since 2007, GOTR-S has educated and empowered 850 girls in the Tahoe Basin to be joyful, healthy and confident. The Program is growing by leaps and bounds in Tahoe and has had a 33 percent increase in enrollment. The program has been in the Incline Elementary School since 2012 and is also available in South Lake Tahoe, Reno and Truckee.

The mission of GOTR-S is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The 20-lesson curriculum teaches girls life skills including exercise and nutrition and how to cope with bullying, peer pressure, and gossip.

The program started in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  The earliest version of the curriculum was piloted in 1996 with the help of 13 girls and the next season 26 joined. The organization was officially a 501(c3) in 2000. Today the program serves over 130,000 girls in 200+ cities across North America each year with its health education, life skills development, mentoring relationship and physical training programs.

GOTR-S combines training for a 5K running race with healthy living education. Their programs instill self-esteem and strong values through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships and physical training – all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff and the community.
